World Press Freedom Day was initiated by the United Nations in 1993 to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and to remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression.

In a geopolitically challenging and rapidly changing world, increasingly shaped by campaigns of misinformation and disinformation, journalists across the media landscape play a vital role in reporting truthfully, accurately and in a timely manner, and in countering false narratives. This brings challenges, but also opportunities to act as agents of peace.

This year, World Press Freedom Day focuses on using information as a tool for stability. This includes fostering independent journalism, strengthening democratic resilience and promoting digital rights to counter the growing manipulation of information. It also requires empowering youth, protecting human rights and building economic - and, in some cases, environmental - resilience.

After the event, the Rotary Club Vienna Maria Theresia invites guests to some light refreshments.

This event will be broadcast live at https://www.da-vienna.ac.at/live.
