DA: What brought you to the DA and why have you chosen MAIS?
Judith Bauer: The DA boasts a rich array of courses complemented by foundational pillars designed to foster interdisciplinary learning among its students. This unique structure enables students to cultivate both specialized expertise and a broad-based understanding of global affairs simultaneously.
In selecting the MAIS programme, I was particularly drawn to its emphasis on international exchange opportunities during the second year—an aspect of the programme from which I have been fortunate to benefit. I firmly believe that the MAIS programme offers an exceptional pathway for individuals aspiring to embark on an international career.

What impact does/did the Alumni Hall of Fame Scholarship have on your second academic year?
Receiving the Alumni Hall of Fame Scholarship was a deeply gratifying experience, one that filled me with a sense of pride regarding my academic achievements and profound appreciation for the generosity demonstrated by the esteemed members of the Hall of Fame. Reflecting on the journey that has led me to this point in my academic pursuits evokes a sense of humility, as I am reminded of the invaluable support and guidance I have received along the way.
While the scholarship undoubtedly represents a meaningful contribution towards my educational expenses at the DA, it covers just slightly above 5% of the total costs. While this gesture serves as a commendable acknowledgment from the esteemed alumni of the DA, its practical impact on alleviating the financial burden for students is limited.
It is important to recognize that the issue of affordability within educational institutions transcends individual acts of philanthropy. Rather, it is indicative of systemic challenges that necessitate an institutional reform, particularly in a nation such as Austria, which may pride itself for its accessible education for all.
Receiving the Alumni Hall of Fame Scholarship has reinforced my steadfast belief in the principles of equal access and opportunity for all deserving students. Rather than solely serving to mitigate the costs of my education, I view this scholarship as an affirmation of the importance of fostering an inclusive academic environment, and hope for a future where a beneficiary may spend the award solely on recreative purposes instead.

What are some of the highlights of your time at the DA?
The DA has allowed me to specialise further on my MENA focus and to gain a deeper understanding of interdisciplinary connections in international relations. My interest in peace and conflict was enhanced by the interesting courses I chose and evening events that took place during my time at the DA. Writing my thesis in development economics is an enriching experience which I value highly for that I may focus on a matter close to my personal interest with the option for close guidance and feedback by my highly encouraging and knowledgeable supervisor.

What are your professional aspirations?
I am interested in the establishing and sustaining of peace within and beyond regions. I believe that it is the international community’s duty to ensure a global positive peace, but that it only will last once nations have a truly equitable relationship and once an emphasis is put on listening to each other. Towards this, I aspire a career in finding diplomatic solutions outside the MFA and outside any political party.

Who are the people you would like to meet and work with in the future?
I would like for my workplace to be a meeting place of voices; a bridge between policy makers and people affected by the policies. I would like to meet people from the smallest villages and large towns – and I would like to take their stories closely with me when working on solutions together with political decision makers and when advising on internationally and nationally effective decisions.

How would you want to be involved with the DA’s alumni network?
I am committed to remaining actively involved in the esteemed alumni network of the DA, as I am passionate about offering support to the talented and promising students who are integral to its community. It is my sincere hope that the DA will continue to evolve in tandem with the rapidly changing global landscape, ensuring its continued relevance and esteemed status. Undoubtedly, the alumni network possesses the potential to serve as a valuable resource in this endeavour, and I would be privileged to contribute to its efforts once I have solidified my own professional path.

ETIA 15 student and Alumni Hall of Fame Scholarship awardee 2022-23

What brought you to the DA and why have you chosen ETIA?

I sought a programme that would equip me with the skills and knowledge to resolve pressing environmental issues. The opportunity to collaborate with like-minded individuals and conduct hands-on research in fields such as waste management, conservation, renewable energy, and environmental policy played a significant role in my decision.

What impact did the Alumni Hall of Fame Scholarship have on your second academic year?

It allowed me to focus more on my studies and extracurricular activities without having to constantly fret about tuition fees and other expenses. Furthermore, the scholarship served as a constant reminder of the confidence and faith that others have in my abilities, and it encouraged me to stretch my own limits and strive for greater levels of achievement.

What are some of the highlights of your time at the DA?

A significant highlight of my time at the DA was the opportunity to engage with a vibrant and multicultural community. Interacting with students from various backgrounds broadened my perspective, increased my appreciation for different cultures, and fostered enduring relationships.

What are your professional aspirations?

I aspire to take on roles that allow me to collaborate with diverse individuals and organizations, fostering innovation and driving positive change in the environmental sector.

Who are the people you would like to meet and work with in the future?

I look forward to working and networking with inspiring people who share my values, aspirations, and commitment to making positive change. Collaborating with such individuals would enhance my career and provide a platform for collective development, innovation, and enduring impact in our respective fields.

How would you want to be involved with the DA’s alumni network?

I would like to actively engage with the alumni network by serving as a mentor, participating in networking events, contributing to fundraising campaigns, and facilitating industry engagement in order to help future students receive the same benefits I did.

Introducing Milica Vujacic

ETIA 14 student and Alumni Hall of Fame Scholarship awardee 2021-22

What brought you to the DA and why have you chosen ETIA?

Having been founded in 1754, the DA is one of the oldest and most renowned institutions of this beautiful city. My interest in pursuing my studies at the DA started years ago after having heard about several positive experiences from alumni. Once I learned about the existence of the ETIA programme, I immediately knew this was the next logical step in my educational path as ETIA combines my previous field of study abroad in natural sciences with multilateralism, which has played a large role during my entire life. Furthermore, Vienna is one of the most relevant cities from an international point of view and holds a dear place in my heart as it is the city I grew up in.

What impact does the Alumni Hall of Fame Scholarship have on your second academic year?

Without a doubt, the DA Alumni Hall of Fame Scholarship has significantly supported me financially in my decision to attend a 2-year programme at this institution. I want to point out that this scholarship has more than just a financial value to me. Receiving this scholarship is a sign of recognition and support for my time at the DA. I see it as a reassurance that my continuous efforts are paying off and that I am on the right path to a fulfilling future.

What are some of the highlights of your time at the DA?

What sets apart the DA from other educational institutions is the direct exchange and dialogue with the most highly qualified experts in the respective fields who have a lot of practical experience that they are willing to share with students. This offers unique insights into what might await us in our future careers. This is not only shown in classes but also through weekly career talks that the DA organizes, through which it deliberately aims to prepare students for life after the DA.

What are your professional aspirations?

I chose to pursue my master’s degree in the ETIA program because I aspire to work in the energy sector to facilitate a global energy transition. My year at the DA has provided me with irreplaceable knowledge on multilateralism. The globalization of the world economy is followed by the globalization of the world's problems. We are facing different challenges as compared to those in the past which is why I believe the energy transition must happen on an international level if it is to be a success.

Who are the people you would like to meet and work with in the future?

In the future, I hope to work with people with a clear vision, who inspire me and who challenge me to see issues from different viewpoints.

How would you want to be involved with DA’s alumni network?

The DA’s alumni network is one of its most valuable assets and therefore I will, with pleasure, continue to be an active part in this community. This will include staying a member of ClubDA, continuing to attend the DA’s numerous events and staying in touch with my fellow peers. I am grateful to the DA for providing us with such opportunities.

Introducing Iris Zerlauth

ETIA 14 student and Alumni Hall of Fame Scholarship awardee 2021-22

What brought you to the DA and why have you chosen ETIA?

After having finished my Bachelor in International Business and completed various internships and study programs abroad, I was fascinated when recognizing the interdependency between economic interests, the environmental challenges and their possible innovative technical solutions, in context with legal boundaries. The combination of technical, diplomatic and political aspects of ETIA complements my prior financial and economic background perfectly. The international context and various backgrounds and experiences of the teaching professors and international students further spurred my interest for the DA and TU.

What impact does the Alumni Hall of Fame Scholarship have on your second academic year?

Due to the financial contribution the Alumni Hall of Fame Scholarship provided, I was able to focus on my studies and academic achievements and reduce hours working next to it. The scholarship eased the financial burden on my family and me, for which I am very thankful!

What are some of the highlights of your time at the DA?

Despite COVID-19 did change and impact our student life, it was filled with highlights and unforgettable university moments, for which I am very grateful. I appreciated the incredibly strong community and network of colleagues (in the meantime they are friends) at the DA, who ensured that online classes were as much fun and challenging as in person. We have learned to live with adversity and adapted quickly to changing boundaries. On top, I had the honor to represent the student body of the DA, a role in which I learnt a lot about the organization, colleagues and myself.

What are your professional aspirations?

Various internships and work experiences during my studies have given me already a first glance in what is ahead! I am looking to work in a challenging, dynamic environment such as, for example, in consulting or project management, where I would be eager to actively broaden my skillset and network while generating a sustainable and effective impact. Professionally, I would love to move abroad for a couple of years, improve my language skills, explore challenges and experience some adventures.

Who are the people you would like to meet and work with in the future?

I am very thankful to have been surrounded with so many inspiring people so far. I hope that my future colleagues are curious and also hungry to work and strive for what they believe in. I would be excited to work with and get mentored from inspiring people, to improve, grow and learn, how to become a good leader.

How would you want to be involved with DA’s alumni network?

I hope to play an active role and stay connected with the Academy and its alumni even when my academic path comes to an end in summer. The DA’s alumni network provides a unique opportunity to stay connected with peers and like-minded people as well as learn from each other and share experiences. I am hoping to give back and help another DA student in a couple of years in course of a mentoring opportunity - just as I was supported this time.

Introducing Sarah Noemi Weckbecker

MAIS 24 student and Alumni Hall of Fame Scholarship awardee 2020-21

What brought you to the DA and why have you chosen MAIS?

Ever since high school, I pursued a career at the Foreign Ministry in Germany in the future, with a focus on human rights and economic development. The MAIS programme offered me not only a wide range of subjects but also professors from the diplomatic service with first-hand experiences. The international community with different academic backgrounds further spurred my interest and motivation to study at the DA.

What impact did the Alumni Hall of Fame Scholarship have on your second academic year?

The COVID pandemic has brought unexpected consequences and changed all our lives in various facets. The scholarship, therefore, eased the financial burden on my family and provided a great financial support. Thereby, it allowed me to fully focus on my future career: I was able to do an internship at the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development in Berlin in addition to my studies.

What were some of the highlights of your time at the DA?

I would say that my personal highlights were the Christmas Extravaganza in December 2019 and the Charity Ball in February 2020. Our student life has changed dramatically due to COVID-19 ever since. On the one hand, I learned to appreciate these shared memories even more. On the other hand, who can say they went through a global pandemic with their friends at university? So, the long-term friends I made in these two years have been my personal highlight.

What are your professional aspirations?

As cheesy as it may sound, my endeavour has always been to bring more justice into the world and to have a lasting impact with my work. I have always wanted to change the lives of others. To me, this never meant travelling to orphanages, playing football and teaching English: I aspire to make a sustainable contribution and provide help for self-help with my work.

Who are the people you would like to meet and work with in the future?

Generally speaking, I want to work with people who are not satisfied with the status-quo and strive for change. I would be honoured to work with women, such as Malala Yousafzai, on projects protecting human rights while improving the education standards of young girls around the world.

How would you want to be involved with DA’s alumni network?

The DA’s alumni network is a great opportunity to share experiences and stay connected with like-minded people. Of course, I would like to support DA students in the future - just as I was supported this year. Thereby, I hope to give something back to the community that welcomed me once so warmly and supported me financially.

Introducing Konstantin Oedl

ETIA 12 student and Alumni Hall of Fame Scholarship awardee 2019-20

What brought you to the DA and why have you chosen ETIA?

I decided to apply for the ETIA programme, as I was looking for an education focusing on the topic of sustainable development. The combination of its various dimensions, the political, the economical, the social and the environmental, embodies the foundation of what I wanted to include into my expertise. Furthermore, the dual education of politics and diplomacy as well as technlogical understanding allows me to work competently within this field.

What impact did the Alumni Hall of Fame Scholarship have on your second academic year?

The HoF Scholarship strongly supported me within a personal process of transformation. Through not worrying about my income and bills I have to pay, I certainly could put all my focus on my studies and my future career. Now, in the moment of almost being finished with my programme I feel much more confindent in succesfully graduating. 

What was your personal highlight of your time at the DA?

There are a few things I have to mention. First of all, interacting with my colleagues and building long lasting relationships can be seen as the centre of studying at the DA. Secondly, I see the academic input I received as very valuable for my life. Furthermore, I have to mention that the experience of working under constant pressure during this intense study, helped me to build up a strong skill set in dealing with all sorts of tasks at the same time and dealing with them in a much more constructive way. 

How do you think you can contribute to changing the world after finishing your studies?

Changing the world does not only start with the wishes and thoughts of doing something, but with the first steps of actually contributing. The knowledge I have gained throughout these two years taught me various different ways how to approach problems and how to come up with effective solutions. Especially, the critical thinking about challenges serves me as an valuable tool how to do things differently. Wherever I will put time of my life into, it will be enriched by the knowledge and experience I gained during my studies.  

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

One superpower I would love to have is to be able to enhance and amplify the best potential and good of people in general. That we all contribute to this world in the best way possible and reduce suffering to a minimum. 

Who are the people you would like to meet and work with in the future?

I see so many great people out there. Active, inspiring, strong and dynamic people. People who can adapt to various situations and develop great solutions and positive change. Even if it sometimes does not seem to be the biggest change, people should stay confindent about their little impact. Even the smallest change can start a chain reaction of positive events. These are the people I want to meet and work with. 

How and in which form would you want to be involved with DA’s alumni network?

I see the DA alumni network as a very good possibility of connecting, supporting and exchanging between previous students. I am happy to actively take part within the network to support each other and enhance the individual and collective potential of everybody.

Introducing Anja Vujaković

ETIA 12 student and Alumni Hall of Fame Scholarship awardee 2019-20

What brought you to the DA and why have you chosen ETIA? 

Observing and analyzing the global political landscape, I became mortified by the fact that the vast majority of global leaders were ill-equipped and did not possess the basic knowledge to efficiently address some of the most pressing issues of this century – the environmental ones. Thinking ecologically does not mean thinking like a biologist, chemist, economist or an engineer – environmental science is an integrated science. It is very complex and ETIA programme is the solution. 

What impact did the Alumni Hall of Fame Scholarship have on your second academic year? 

It brought me a sense of security during the stressful months filled with exacting seminars and exams. I could focus solely on studying and advancing academically and did not have to worry about paying the bills for a couple of months. Additionally, it contributed to my decision to adopt a cat, which is something that has brought me a lot of joy. 

What was your personal highlight of your time at the DA? 

Personally, my most cherished memories of the DA will be those of late nights in the reading room during the exam weeks, ordering fast food and being exhausted together. What is special about the DA is this shared feeling of hunger for knowledge and everyone really wanting to be there, late in the night, learning and becoming better people. On a more professional note, extraordinary career services and the rich and engaged alumni network is also something that sets the DA apart from most other Universities.

How do you think you can contribute to changing the world after finishing your studies? 

The DA and particularly the ETIA programme have given me the gift of knowledge – a kind of knowledge I did not have before I started here. I have learned so much in such a short amount of time and I believe that sharing this knowledge with others, both in my personal and professional life, is how we all can do our part in changing the world for the better. Making better decisions than the leaders before us is a responsibility we all share, and I know no better place than the DA to enable young people to do so. 

If you could have one superpower, what would it be? 

I would like to have the ability to control time – to stop it, stretch it, bend it, rewind or fast forward it. Who wouldn’t like to be able to turn back time and prevent things from happening, or do things differently, be at two places at the same time? The possibilities are infinite.

Who are the people you would like to meet and work with in the future? 

I do not have particular people in mind, but I do know that I thrive in international environments with equal opportunities. I would like to meet and work with people who are constantly learning and improving themselves and who do not seek to compete, but to cooperate instead. 

How and in which form would you want to be involved with DA’s alumni network?

These past two years at the DA have been so intense that I find it hard to imagine my life without somehow being involved with the Academy. I do not know where my career will take me, but I hope to be able to participate actively in a variety of Club DA’s events, gatherings and other activities. One day, when I am more advanced in my career and I feel like I have ripe knowledge to share, I would like to sign up as a mentor as well.
